An archipelago of 7,107 islands makes up the Republic of the Philippines with its main island groups being Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Manila is its capital.

Its people are known as Filipinos. With a population estimated at over 90 million, 90% of them are Christians (where 81% are Roman Catholics as a result of about 400 years Spanish and American rule in the past).

The Filipino culture is a fusion of influences between the Hispanic, American, Chinese, Arab and Indian. All this is evident in their cuisine, folk art, architecture, language, attire, festivals and religion.

The national language is Tagalog while English is widely spoken throughout the country.
