Fondly known as KL, Kuala Lumpur is Malaysia's capital city, a metropolis that blossomed from its tin-mining village roots. It is also the political, economic, tourism, historical and cultural centre of the country.
Kuala Lumpur, a Federal Territory, is an enclave within the state of Selangor, which is on the central west coast of Peninsular or West Malaysia. The name Kuala Lumpur literally translates as "muddy confluence". The city's geography is basically categorized by a valley called Klang Valley.
Residents of the city are known as KLites. Major languages spoken here are Bahasa Melayu, English, Cantonese, Mandarin and Tamil.
The metropolitan is also the nation's fashion and retail hub with a growing list of over 60 shopping malls to-date, which has made it one of the top shopping destinations in the region.
