The largest state in Malaysia, Sarawak sits on the Borneo island sharing its borders with another East Malaysian state, Sabah, Brunei and the Indonesian province of Kalimantan. It is divided into 11 divisions: Kuching, Miri, Sibu, Bintulu, Betong, Kapit, Limbang, Mukah, Samarahan, Sarikei and Sri Aman. Kuching is the state capital.
Known as the "Land of the Hornbills", Sarawak is famous for its many national parks and nature reserves, namely the world renowned Niah National Park, the Gunung Mulu National Park and Bako National Park.
The state is also known for its unique ethnic mix of people. Other than Malays and Chinese, there are the Ibans, Bidayuhs, Kelabits, Kenyahs, Melanaus and Orang Ulus, just to name a few.
Longhouse visits can also be arranged through local tour agents. But the best way to really see Sarawak is to have a local friend bring you around.
Once in Sarawak, one must not forget to try the local food such as Sarawak Laksa, Kolo Mee, and various edible jungle ferns like Midin and Paku.
Souvenirs to buy from Sarawak includes the woven fabrics by the Ibans called Pua Kumbu, ethnic handicrafts made from beads, wood, bamboo and rattan, black pepper, and even the Kek Lapis Sarawak or Layer Cake.
