Kelantan Darul Naim lies on the north-east of Peninsula Malaysia and its state capital is Kota Bharu. It is the most conservative and Islamic state in the country.
The majority of its population is Malays (95%) followed by Chinese, Indians and "Orang Siam", Buddhist-Thais who has lived there for centuries. Kelantan shares the border with Thailand and it is no wonder that its local food is also heavily influenced by the Thais.
Popular Kelantanese cuisines to try are Nasi Kerabu, Ayam Golek/Ayam Percik, Keropok Gote, Kaeng Matsaman, Laksa Kelantan, Budu and Tempoyak.
The people in this Muslim state speak the Kelantanese Malay dialect, which is significantly different, compared to the standard Bahasa Melayu used nationwide. It is somewhat incomprehensible for most people due to the unique pronunciation and intonation of words.
While in Kelantan, experience its cultural practices like Wayang Kulit, Dikir Barat, Mak Yong, top-spinning, kite-flying and various handicrafts like woodcarving, weaving, songket, batik and silverware.
