The Republic of Indonesia consists of 17,508 islands and is considered as the world's largest archipelagic state. With a population of an estimated 235 million people, Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous nation and also has the largest Muslim population in the world. It shares land borders with East Timor, Papua New Guinea and Malaysia on the island of Borneo.
Its capital is Jakarta, which is located on the northwest coast of Java. Jakarta is also the 12th largest city in the world. Some people compare Jakarta with Mumbai, in terms of traffic jam. But, really, Jakarta is like no other. The traffic, the people, the air, the atmosphere, the diversity and disparity is unique to Jakarta only.
The republic has 300 ethnic groups, each with its cultural uniqueness with Arabic, Indian, Malay, Chinese and European influences. Not only it is famous of its culture and food, Indonesia is also known for its natural wonders such as Lake Toba in Sumatera and well, 150 active volcanoes scattered across its land.
