Saturday, 26 March 2011- 8.30pm: Will you be powering down for Earth Hour 2011?

Earth Hour is an international event that takes place once a year, where we're all to turn off unnecessary power supplies for sixty minutes. It's part of an initiative to spread the awareness towards reducing human impact on Earth.
As the world pledges its promise to save Planet Earth by switching off the lights, it gets you wondering what you'll be doing from 8.30- 9.30pm. Well, we at Koolred have compiled five fun things you can do to spend that hour in the dark (also, this would be a good guide in case there's a blackout). There's no need to moan in the dark while you wait to turn the lights back on:
1.Take a walk

Walk around the neighbourhood and see what they've switched off in their houses. You'll probably make friends during the walk and you'll be surprised by how many people actually get involved with Earth Hour (just like you!). Oh, and no fiddling with your Blackberrys, iPhones or any mobile devices while you're out.
2. Fire it up!

Let there be light! Candles were essential in the olden days due to a lack of electricity. So set some around your home and there you have it- a nice, cosy Saturday night stay-in! Prepare a candlelight supper that does not require heavy cooking, or bring out those classic board games and enjoy a few set of games with your family or friends. It'll be very nostalgic, as you reminisce about the days you grew up with Monopoly and Scrabbles (it's nice to lay off the X-Box and Playstations once in awhile).
3.Take a nap

Or meditate. Or just relax.
Earth Hour doesn't just help Mother Earth, it helps us "save our energy" too! Take the hour to catch up on some sleep or simply to get some extra rest. Besides, nothing makes the time go faster than sleeping. If you're not sleepy, use this moment to zone out from all distractions. It'll be an hour of pure, relaxing silence to take your mind of things.
4. Spook yourselves out!

Why not? The eerie effect is enhanced when everywhere around you is without light! It'll be tough not to have goosebumps when one of your friends is delving into a ghost story they've once encountered. Share ghost stories while having the room dimly lighted with candles- it'll definitely send shivers down everybody's spines!
5.Have an Earth Hour Party

We saved the best for last! An eco-friendly party is just what you need during Earth Hour. Gather your friends together at the park and toast to another successful Earth Hour initiative. Prepare meals that are environmentally-friendly or have an "easy food" pot luck amongst your clique members. It's easy to whip up something that does not require cooking- such as salads, stuffed pitas, no-bake desserts and fruits. If you need music at the party, bring out the guitar and have a campfire-like session with your mates as you sing to your favourite tunes.
We hope you enjoyed this read. Koolred's such big fans of "Go Green" ideas so we're truly excited about this year's Earth Hour. There's more to it than just switching the lights off, it's about working together to build a better and more sustainable future for us all. Together our actions will make a difference... so tell us, what will you be doing this Earth Hour?
